Iodotropheus - This genus is a resident of Lake Malawi. They are omnivores. They are also polygamous mouthbrooders. They are extremely peaceful for mbuna. Because of their larger adult size, they are recommended for tanks 30+, 55 being acceptable. |

Julidochromis - These are the "Slender" Cichlids, from Lake Tanganyika. The dwarf species (J. ornatus, J. transcriptus, J. dickfeldi) can be kept easily in tanks as small as 10 gallons. The only times one may experience any aggressiveness with the dwarfs is during pair formation. The larger species (J. regani, J. marlieri ) should not be kept in tanks less than a 30 gallon, simply because of their size and increased aggression. Julidochromis are micro-predators. Overall, they are very peaceful with tankmates. They are monogamous substrate spawners. |

Labeotropheus - These are highly aggressive mbuna from Lake Malawi. They are grazers, and must have plant matter in their diet. They are polygamous mouthbrooders. One by itself is usually peaceful towards other tankmates, but, if they are going to be kept in groups, they need an aquarium at least 75 gallons in capacity. |

Labidochromis - These fish are small members of the Mbuna group from Lake Malawi. They are generally extremely peaceful omnivores. They are best kept in tanks 30 gallons and up, only because they can reach moderate sizes. However, smaller specimens can easily be housed in 20 gallon tanks. |

Labidochromis sp. "Perlmutt" |
Labidochromis caeruleus "Lemon / Electric Yellow" |
Lamprologus (Lepidolamprologus) - This genus from Lake Tanganyika has recently undergone revision. The fishes which remain in this genus (L. nkambe and similar... ) are the largest Lamprologine Cichlids. Some authors also recognize the genus Lepidiolamprologus, in which the largest, most predatory Lamprologine Cichlids (they tend to look like pikes) are sometimes placed. Lamprologus are primarily piscivorous (predators) and are considered moderately to highly aggressive. They are monogamous substrate spawners, best suited for tanks of at least 55 gallons, preferably 75 and up because of their large adult size. |
Lepidolamprologus nkambae |
Lethrinops - An extremely peaceful group of fish from Lake Malawi. Lethrinops are seldom colorful, but there are exceptions. They are micro-predators, which sift sand to extract small edible organisms. Lethrinops are moderately sized, smaller specimens could be kept in a 30 gallon tank, although most would be better off in at least a 75 gallon aquarium. They are polygamous mouthbrooders. |
