Maravichromis- Maravichromis is a genus of medium to large, moderately aggressive fish from Lake Malawi. Smaller species can be kept in aquariums from 55 gallons, whereas the larger species should not be kept in anything less than 75 gallons. They are omnivores, and are polygamous mouthbrooders.
Melanochromis - These mbuna come from Lake Malawi. The least aggressive species (M. johanni ) can be kept in tanks as small as 55 gallons. Moderately aggressive species (M. auratus, M. sp. "Blotch", M . exasperatus ) can be kept in tanks 75 gallons and up, whereas the highly aggressive species (M. chipokae) must be kept in tanks no less than 100 gallons, preferably 125 plus. A recently discovered dwarf species M. dialepis could conceivably be kept in a 30 gallon aquarium. All Melanochromis are polygamous mouthbrooders, and males are extremely intolerant of each other. Starting off with 20 fish, the approximate 10 males usually will slowly kill each other off until you are left with 1. These fishes are omnivores. |
