The Cichlid Factory: Our Easy Recipe That Works! By Matt Pedersen, 4th Edition, Copyright © 1999

Nimbochromis - This is a popular group of Cichlids from Lake Malawi. They grow to a fairly large size, and are moderately aggressive. They are predators. Nimbochromis are polygamous mouthbrooders. The females of this genus are very similarly marked, best described as brown camouflage. Because of their large size and aggressive nature, they are best housed in tanks 75 gallons and larger. (Formerly Haplochromis)

Nyassachromis - This is a small genus from Lake Malawi. They are very peaceful fish which can be kept in tanks as small as 30 gallons. They are polygamous mouthbrooders. (Formerly Haplochromis)

Ophthalmotilapia - This is another genus from Lake Tanganyika whose members are known to hobbyists as "Featherfins". They are very peaceful, although males may appear to aggressively display to each other. However, it is all just bluff. They do best in large groups, although smaller groups or trios can be kept in tanks as small as 55 gallons. They are plankton feeders. Ophthalmotilapia are polygamous mouthbrooders.

Otopharynx - This is another group of relatively peaceful fish from Lake Malawi. They are micro-predators. They are polygamous mouthbrooders. These Cichlids tend to have an overall larger adult size, so, depending on the species, the minim tank size recommended is 30-55 gallons. Only the males of this genus are colorful. (Formerly Haplochromis)

Paracyprichromis - This is the other genus of "Sardine Cichlids" from Lake Tanganyika. Paracyprichromis are rather sensitive fish. They grow larger than Cyprichromis , thus requiring slightly larger housing, probably a 75 gallon for a large group. Paracyprichromis are plankton feeders. They are peaceful, but do not fair well with tankmates other than their own species. They are also polygamous mouthbrooders. Paracyprichromis breini 'Velifer' (Young Male)

Petrochromis- These are extremely large and highly aggressive grazers from Lake Tanganyika. These fish should be fed exclusively veggies. Petrochromis must be kept in tanks larger than 100 gallons, preferably 200. It isn't uncommon to have to separate males from the females even in these larger tanks. They are polygamous mouthbrooders. Petrotilapia - These fishes are very similar to Pseudotropheus . They are also from Lake Malawi. They are polygamous mouthbrooders, which should be housed in tanks preferably 75 gallons and up, although they can be "squeezed" into tanks down to 55 gallons. Both females and males of this genus are attractive.
